Anal sacs are made up of glands with one found on either side of the anus. They are simply used for scenting of territory by the animal. The sacs are normally emptied when the pet has a bowel movement. Sometimes this does not happen and the sacs become impacted and can become infected.
The most common indication that there is a problem is when the pet scoots it's hindquarters along the ground. This behaviour is often confused with the pet being infected with worms. Other signs are persistent licking at the hind end or at the base of the tail.
The cause is unknown but is sometimes attributed to episodes of soft stool or diarrhea, poor muscle tone of the anus or over secretion of the anal glands.
The sacs can be expressed manually to relieve the discomfort. This should be done by a veterinarian or veterinary technician. Depending on the severity of the impaction, it may need to be done as often as every couple of weeks. If an infection has set in, antibiotics will be needed.
If there comes a time where the anal sacs need to be expressed frequently, you do have the option to have the sacs surgically removed. It is an effective and permanent way to prevent infection of the glands. Please ask our staff or veterinarians if you have questions about the surgery.
