Ear Mite Infestation in Cats

Ear mites are tiny mites that can cause several symptoms, including a black discharge, scratching, and head shaking. Ear mites can affect adult cats and kittens. Sometimes, ear mites will lead to a bacterial and/or yeast infection. Often the mites may be gone, but a significant ear infection remains.

To diagnose ear mites we take a swab of the discharge from your cats ear and examine it under a microscope. We can then identify the ear mites, bacteria and yeast. This information is used to choose the appropriate medication for your pet.

Treatment Plan

If your cat only has ear mites, we will apply medication into the ears here in the hospital. If there is a bacterial or yeast infection you may be required to continue treatment at home.

If there is still dark debris present in the ear after 1 week, a non-irritating ear cleaning liquid may be needed. To prevent damage to sensitive areas, do not use swabs in the ear canal.

We will schedule your pet for a recheck appointment in 2 weeks to confirm that the infection has cleared.
