Microchips are a safe, quick and effective form of identification that lasts the life time of your pet.
The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and it is injected under the skin, much like a vaccine, between the shoulder blades. The chip contains a unique electronic bar code that is picked up by a universal scanner. The scanner picks up the code that we then call into a microchip center. The center is open 24 hours a day, 365 day a year. By giving the code we then get the address and name of the pet and owner so it can be returned to it's home. All animal shelters and veterinary practices are equipped with microchip scanners.
Along with the animals info, the registration form asks for your name and address as well as a contact person other than yourself (i.e. sister, mother). We also supply the hospital's information.
There is a one time fee for the placement and registration of the microchip. Should any of the contact information change from the day of placement (i.e. you move) you simply call in the new info to the company.
Unfortunately, tatoo's often become hard to read and fade as the animal gets older. Tags should be put on animals at all times as they are easily visible and show readily that the pet has a home. But collars are often lost or broken. In addition, the database for tatoos and tags is not available at all times.
I've heard microchips can migrate, is this true?
In the past, when microchips first became available, there had been cases of them migrating to other areas of the body. Today, microchips are especially designed to adhere to the area they are injected into to prevent migration.
