Puppy Nutrition

The most important part of feeding your puppy is to ensure that all essential nutrients are available in a meal size that satisfies.

Overfeeding

If puppies eat more food than they need, their growth rate increases and they will start to accumulate fat. Some puppy foods are so high in calories that it is easy for a puppy to overeat. Our goal is to keep your puppy lean and to feed only the amount of food that is required for healthy development.

Hip Dysplasia
For breeds at risk for hip and elbow dysplasia it is very important to have an optimal rate of bone growth. Bones grow from a cartilage layer on the end of them. The cartilage is gradually replaced by bone. The more rapid the growth the thicker the layer of cartilage. Thick layers of cartilage will bend and deform and if this cartilage is forced to carry around overweight puppies, cracks and crevices can appear causing hip or elbow dysplasia.

The Right Food
We will help you monitor your puppy's growth rate by assessing his body condition and weight. Comparing these to growth curves, we then calculate his nutritional requirements. From these calculations we can help you choose the right food and tell you how much to feed.

We Most Often Recommend Medi-cal Development
Medical Development is a nutrient-dense, exceptionally palatable diet for puppies. Chicken, fish and egg provide high quality, easily digestible protein sources. Flax and primrose oil are sources of omega fatty acids to promote healthy skin and a lustrous coat, Added fructo-oligosaccharides and digestive enzymes help maintain a healthy digestive tract. Development Formula is naturally preserved with vitamin E, citric acid, rosemary extract and lecithin.

Treats
In addition to choosing the right food and amount to feed, we must consider the amount of treats fed. Training with treats is great, but lets not overdue it. Treats should not make up more that 10% of your puppy's caloric intake. We suggest you carry some kibble in a bag to give as treat, use Medi-Treats which have only 13 calories each, or Benny Bully's which are low in fat.
