Feeding Stray Cats

Although most of the people are ardent animal lovers, obviously there are a few cats out there that are dropped off and left to fend for themselves. If you have taken on the responsibility for these unfortunates, good work! Remember that the best thing you can do for a stray is to attempt to find it a good home. I understand this is a long process so in the meantime, they still need to be looked after.

In addition to making food available, always make sure that there is fresh, unfrozen water around. Heated waterbowls are a great invention but the overwintering birds tend to use them for bird baths and drinking too. Make sure that you clean them regularly. For sleeping arrangements, most of the hardy strays are able to do without heated quarters but the new cats on the block will appreciate some warm shelter.

A note of caution when approaching stray animals. Ontario is one of the areas where rabies is still a big problem. Although many of the rabies vaccines can last three years, you never know if these animals have ever had any vaccines.

If the cat looks like it has been looked after, also check to see if it has been declawed. Many of our strays have been household pets at some time in their past and have either been left behind or dropped off. Without their claws, they will not be able to fend for themselves or protect themselves from other cats. Again, the best good Samaritan deed you can do for a stray is to find them a loving home. Our bulletin board is always available to help in this way.
